About The Fairway GM

I’m Rick Callies, a Class A PGA Golf Professional in good standing with a degree in Golf Course Management. I’ve been working in the golf business since I was 15 and have spent more than 20 years as a General Manager, overseeing a facility that generates more than 35,000 rounds each year.

Over my career, I’ve gained experience in virtually every area of golf operations, but my focus today is leadership, management and building a successful golf business.

 

What I Manage

  • Staffing & Leadership — hiring, training, scheduling, managing and developing staff

  • Policies & Procedures — creating, implementing and maintaining policies for the course, employees and daily operations

  • Operations — overseeing the day-to-day operation of the entire facility

  • Customer Service — creating standards and systems that deliver a better customer experience

  • Financial Management — accounting, budgeting, pricing and profitability

  • Marketing & Communication — email marketing, social media and customer communication

  • Golf Operations — instruction, junior golf programs, tournaments, leagues and player development

  • Retail & Merchandise — purchasing, pricing, inventory and pro shop operations

  • Food & Beverage — bar and kitchen operations, staffing and service

  • Course Operations — working with and overseeing maintenance, grounds and course presentation

 

I’ve learned that being a great GM isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about understanding how all the pieces fit together, leading people, solving problems and building systems that make the business work.

 

That’s why I created The Fairway GM.

 

My goal is to share the real-world lessons, ideas, policies, systems and techniques I’ve learned throughout my career and create a place where managers and leaders can learn from one another.

 

Because the challenges of leadership, staffing, customer service, operations and profitability aren’t unique to golf.

The principles of great management are universal.
